🐞Assateague Island National Seashore is a 50-mile beach which runs from Ocean City to Chincoteague wildlife refuge on the Eastern Shore of Maryland just a few miles south of Ocean City. It is about a 3-hour drive from Washington, DC. I first learned about these beautiful wild ponies/horses from reading the famous book Misty of Chincoteague.
💕 🐴Expect to see the wild horses roaming freely on the beach and salty marshes of Assateague Island. These wild Spanish horses have lived on the island for over 300 years. Assateague Island is also a protected wildlife refuge with a diverse flora and fauna population, and also home to migratory birds. 🦋Assateague Islands is a great day trip with the family. You can relax on the beach or if you’re adventurous you can try the wilderness camping opportunities as well as regular tent and RV camping but reserve well in advance as it gets booked up really fast. Mosquito repellent is a must.
🦆There are no hotels on the island, the closest hotels are in the nearby seaside beach town of Ocean City, Maryland. 🐿Activities include fishing, clamming, crabbing, kayaking, biking, trekking the trails, bird watching, looking for sea shells, kite flying and many more.
🌼There is an entrance fee. Waived for certain status.
🌞Be sure to get there early to avoid the long lines waiting to pay the entrance fee to the park.
